Easy DIY Koozie/Coffee Sleeve

I am on my last few days working here in Texas. Turns out in the 3 months I was there I met some people that I really enjoyed working with, so I decided I wanted to give them a thank you gift. I had some difficulty deciding what I wanted to do because I had a list of 14 people who I would need to make something for. I figure something handmade no matter how small is far more meaningful than something purchased. After some not so good ideas I decided I wanted to make them koozies/coffee sleeves. Working with them I know they drink coffee and occasionally choose to drink tea for their caffeine fix. The best part about making my sleeves is that I could use my scrap fabric so the project would be inexpensive.

Here is what you need:

  • Felt
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Permanent Marker
  • Sewing Machine
  • Coffee Sleeve (from your local coffee shop)

First you want to place your sleeve and trace it.

Now place your felt over the fabric, choosing carefully what part of the design will be on the actual sleeve.

I sometimes put it against a window or my computer screen to get a better look. The felt sticks to the fabric a little, making positioning it a bit easier.

Pin your two pieces together.

Notice we didn't add anything to our original pattern for the seam. We will be using the outside of the foot as our guide. Sew 3 sides leaving one side open.

Here is what your stitch should look like. Notice the unstitched end on the right.

Cut it out.

Turn your fabrics inside out.

It should now look like this. Once side is still open.

Pin the two ends together creating the circle. Place the open end on the bottom.

Choose a stitch style, I used zigzag. Sew. Be sure not to sew the hole for the cup closed!

Your Done!!! Here are a few I made, even for the guys.

For the sake of my gift I added candy and a tag that said,
"Thanks for being so nice to me. Now here's a cup and a handmade koozie".
All my coworkers loved them.
