Easy DIY Koozie/Coffee Sleeve

I am on my last few days working here in Texas. Turns out in the 3 months I was there I met some people that I really enjoyed working with, so I decided I wanted to give them a thank you gift. I had some difficulty deciding what I wanted to do because I had a list of 14 people who I would need to make something for. I figure something handmade no matter how small is far more meaningful than something purchased. After some not so good ideas I decided I wanted to make them koozies/coffee sleeves. Working with them I know they drink coffee and occasionally choose to drink tea for their caffeine fix. The best part about making my sleeves is that I could use my scrap fabric so the project would be inexpensive.

Here is what you need:

  • Felt
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Permanent Marker
  • Sewing Machine
  • Coffee Sleeve (from your local coffee shop)

First you want to place your sleeve and trace it.

Now place your felt over the fabric, choosing carefully what part of the design will be on the actual sleeve.

I sometimes put it against a window or my computer screen to get a better look. The felt sticks to the fabric a little, making positioning it a bit easier.

Pin your two pieces together.

Notice we didn't add anything to our original pattern for the seam. We will be using the outside of the foot as our guide. Sew 3 sides leaving one side open.

Here is what your stitch should look like. Notice the unstitched end on the right.

Cut it out.

Turn your fabrics inside out.

It should now look like this. Once side is still open.

Pin the two ends together creating the circle. Place the open end on the bottom.

Choose a stitch style, I used zigzag. Sew. Be sure not to sew the hole for the cup closed!

Your Done!!! Here are a few I made, even for the guys.

For the sake of my gift I added candy and a tag that said,
"Thanks for being so nice to me. Now here's a cup and a handmade koozie".
All my coworkers loved them.

New! Meghan Trainor - Lips Are Movin'

Lips Are Movin'

Sounds like her new song is just as catchy and cute as the last. Looks like Ms. Trainor is claiming a permanent spot in the pop scene. I look forward to hearing her new album out January 2013. Yay for confidant women, new music and a catchy beat.

Time.com

Something awesome happened the day before veterans day. My honey and I got chosen as Time.com's Best Love Stories of 2014. We are on time.com!! A week later and I am still in shock but super excited.

I entered us on Instagram with brief description. We were one couple of 3 chosen to be featured for Veteran's Day. This will definitely be one the record books, aka our scrapbook. This is something I just wanted to share! Thanks for reading.

Thanksgiving Care Package

Hey there!

It is November and Thanksgiving is pretty much around the corner because for some of us MILSOS, the care package needs to be sent at least 2 weeks in advance. This is a care package I was super excited to get made because it saddens me to know that so many soldiers will not have a traditional thanksgiving dinner. So what better than to bring thanksgiving to him as best you can.

Thanksgiving in a box! Dessert and all!

 Thanksgiving dinner:
*Turkey = Turkey Jerky
*Mashed Potatoes = Instant Mashed Potatoes
*Stuffing = Mac & Cheese (best I could come up with)
*Corn on the Cob = Whole Kernel Corn
*Cranberry Sauce = Craisins
*Fruit = Fruit
*Chips = "whatever is his favorite"

I made sure to include the menu as part of my box decoration.

Dessert anyone?
*Twinkies (can't go wrong with these)
*S'mores (no fire needed) = Graham Crackers, Marshmallow Cream, and Nutella! YUM!!

I remember when I was on a mission trip, out of the country for over a month, Nutella was a nice, delicious reminder of home.  Something I could put on everything!

Included Dessert menu as well!

I wanted to give it a "home-y" feeling so I went with shades of amber/orange. I am not totally sure why but I think it worked out.

 Yes, EVERYTHING FIT!
I often tell myself that you have to have been good at Tertis growing up in order to be good at packing a care package perfectly (by perfectly I mean with as many contents as possible).

My final result. I always try to include a personalized note on one of the flaps.

I would love to see your finished product… post here or on www.facebook.com/crownandcapeblog where you can also see all my projects posted. Follow my blog here too!

Joker & Pin-Up Harley Quinn Halloween Costume

As you may or may not know I am a halloween advocate to the fullest. You can see in one of my previous costume posts that I love thinking of creative costumes and making them myself. Nothing better than hearing the question "where did you buy that?" and being able to respond with "I made it myself!". Not to mention the comfort you feel knowing that no one else at any halloween gathering is going to have your costume. This year is my husbands first halloween in 2 years that he is not spending deployed, so naturally he felt as though it was his right to get to choose our costume theme.

Being true to his comic book loving self he decided he wanted to be the Joker from Batman. This decision only put me as one character, Joker's obsessed girlfriend Harley Quinn.

If I was going to have to be a well known character that is repeated at every costume party known to man, then I was going to find a way to make Harley my own. Something I love about Harley is that she's fun, genuine and always herself no matter what. That is what I needed to make my costume version of her.

Art by Fabian "Monk" Schlaga
That is when a 1950's pin-up Harley came to mind. I absolutely love the 50's and its trends are easily recognizable. So I then I did a little brain storming and a some terrible sketching (I had it pictured much better in my mind). Getting the perfect amount of cute/sexy Harley from the original and 1950's pin-up was not easy to figure out, but I think the outfit turned out pretty well. It was a bit time consuming since I am not exactly a professional seamstress but was totally possible given the time (I started making my costume mid september).

Costume Supplies:
*Simplicity 1426 1950's Vintage
*Wrapping paper/Newspaper (for circle skirt)
*Fabric
*Sewing Machine
*Thread
*Scissors

I started with the circle skirt and used this super easy tutorial. (I would suggest you watch it before you go purchase fabric).

A look at my circle skirt construction process.

I used a couple of tutu-torials (hehe), to get the fluff in the skirt. Super easy and cheap.

I then began making the crop top with my fabric.

Cork Gun Supplies:
*Toy Gun
*Cylinder
*Floral Foam
*Metallic Spray paint
*Cork Color Spray Paint
*Twine
Purchased at the dollar tree except the spray paint.
Took the cylinder and cut it to fit the toy gun. Then I hot glued it in place.
I happened to find the round floral foam that looked like an enlarged cork so i scored there. If you don't find it just shape what you have (it will be messy).

I spray painted my gun a metallic gray and the cork a brown. I let it sit over night then just glued all the pieces together. Using the brown twine as the cork rope.

I added diamond accents on my heels with a piece of matching black elastic. I sewed felt diamonds in the layout I wanted and then just wrapped it around the heel.  This way you can use shoes you like without ruining them.

The final details were the wrist cuffs, purchased black and red (jester) gloves and the 50's glasses.

I used this how to video to make the cuffs, but I just used fabric instead of ribbon. FYI using ribbon is easier but I already had the white fabric so I used it.

Then I just added felt diamonds in opposite colors to coordinate with the characters catsuit.

Oh yea! Can't forget the red lipstick and the cat eyeliner.

I also sewed my husbands Joker shirt, vest and pants :) Kinda explained why I started creating so early. I hope this was helpful and somewhat inspirational for your next costume creation. Remember it's never too early to start deciding your next costume!
